Smart Specializations

The concept of Smart Specializations aims at indicating areas with a high potential, specializing in selected fields of science and technology, research&development works, and innovative undertak-ings taking part in the region's economic development, but also impacting its competitiveness on a national and international scale. The need for each region to determine a list of such specializations results from the European Commission's guidelines concerning the New Financial Perspective for 2014-2020.

Projekt Smart Progress

Interactive technologies

SMART SPECIALIZATION "INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN AN INFORMATION-SATURATED ENVIRONMENT" (PSS2)

Projects fitting the Pomeranian Smart Specialization, coordinated by the Interizon Cluster, will have a chance to take advantage of preferences concerning access to EU funds on a regional level in terms of the Pomeranian Regional Operational Programme for the years 2014-2020 with the budg-et of EUR 1.8 billion, as well on as national (for example in terms of the Smart Growth Operational Programme) and European levels (Horizon 2020).

The subject scope of the Pomeranian Smart Specialization in the field of Interactive technologies in an information-saturated environment has been defined especially from the point of view of key market segments which fit the field of interest for entities conducting their activity in terms of the specialization and problems (especially technological ones) necessary to be handled in terms of introducing new or perfected products and services to these markets. The range is as follows:

Human-machine interface

 Multimodal human-machine interface including:

  • human-machine communication techniques with the use of gestures, emotions, or thoughts;
  • the development of wearable systems (computer systems worn by people and integrating various functions);
  • works concerning building sensor systems allowing to communicate with a machine;
  • technologies and interfaces used in medicine, prevention, rehabilitation, and diagnostics.

Embedded Systems

Embedded systems for smart spaces, Internet of Things, including:

  • technologies and systems for automating, diagnosing, and monitoring various environments (home, car, city, port, etc.);

  • Human-machine technologies and interfaces in terms of communicating with the use of speech, gestures, emotions, and thoughts, including the fields of: medicine, prevention, re-habilitation, and diagnostics.
  • Wearable systems and electronic elements.
  • Embedded systems including the Internet of Things for smart urban spaces.
  • Technologies and methods for analyzing, gathering, processing, and securing data with the use of data processing centers and advanced virtual databases.
  • Methods concerning artificial intelligence, machine learning, with the use of distributed sys-tems, parallel processing, and virtualization.
  • The development and use of satellite techniques in monitoring and security.

Horizontal undertakings of the PSS2 partnership

Horizontal undertakings are understood as projects or groups of projects which apart from general conditions and criteria of selecting projects for financing, in terms of determined financing sources, meet also the following additional conditions:

  • they stand out with a significant economical impact and fit the long-term interest of a vast number of partners active in the field of PSS, especially from the point of view of the area's possible future development;
  • result from an analysis of potentials and barriers concerning development within the field of PSS, determined by the Partnership;
  • clearly define the objectives and expected results, and are supported by the Partnership;
  • in accordance with the principle, engage more than one entity in their preparation and exe-cution (assuming that the more engaged entities the more "horizontal" is the character of the project), ensuring the maximum possible share of own resources.

List of developed and reported PSS2 horizontal undertakings:

  • Broadening the education offer of majors with a practical profile at the level of higher educa-tion institutions for the purposes of the ICT industry - education.
  • Broadening the education offer of majors with a practical profile at the level of higher educa-tion institutions for the purposes of the ICT industry - infrastructure.
  • Methods of anonymizing, gathering, accessing, exchanging, processing, and classifying data for the purposes of the Pomeranian Digital Data Bank (Polish: Pomorski Cyfrowy Bank Danych - PCBD).
  • Developing doctoral studies at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications, and Infor-matics, Gdańsk University of Technology.
